Research activities

Strath Caulaidh believes that managers of natural resources need rapid access to up-to-date sources of relevant, high-quality information. However, research and development policies relating to the management of natural resources are normally determined by central government with subsequent studies carried out, in the main, by universities. Strath Caulaidh believes that this approach creates a gap between science and industry because many university-based researchers have a limited understanding of the real trade-off between theory and practice and seem to place limited emphasis on communicating their ideas to the wider user community. Consequently, practitioners often struggle to find a forum in which to align research needs with the end user. Strath Caulaidh supplies research-quality contract services directly to practitioners to stimulate the development of independent research networks capable of delivering appropriate, targeted information directly to decision-makers.

Challenges

High levels of natural variation make it difficult to accurately quantify the condition and dynamics of ecological systems. Because of this, many organisations find it hard to obtain the quality of information they need to support their decision-making.Also, the natural environment invariably makes data collection in the outdoors very demanding. So it can be hard to find organisations with qualified, professional staff who are capable of executing well-designed technical studies in a safe and effective manner, particularly over long time periods. At Strath Caulaidh, our approach and our business are specifically designed to meet such challenges. And our people are recruited and trained to guarantee delivery of the solutions we develop.

Our People

We take pride in the quality of the people we recruit and retain because our people are our most important asset. That is why Strath Caulaidh is an Investor in People. We feel that it is important to employ our technical staff on a permanent basis whenever possible - this helps us to ensure that we maintain our quality standards, a core aim. Occasionally, new staff join under a short-term contract but always with a view to making the post permanent if at all possible. Our technical staff have a wide range of backgrounds because we value the mix of skills and experience that an open recruitment policy delivers to us. Some staff come with wide-ranging ecological expertise, either commercial or academic. But many are sourced from fields as diverse as commercial forestry, marine biology, banking and off-shore engineering.A diversity of skills is required to work with us because our technical staff are often asked undertake many of the tasks associated with running the company. These include business development and administration through to data collection, analysis and reporting. Such an approach gives us maximum flexibility and stability when planning and delivering our workload. But we also make sure that our in-house training program is intensive and that tailored professional development is continuous, so that all employees develop the core and specialist skills they need to work effectively on behalf of our clients.
