Coignafearn – Peat Seeding Trial

We went back to SNH’s peat seeding trial site at Coignafearn this month for our annual round of monitoring.  Lots happened in the past year.  The trail camera photos from winter and spring show the massive degree of variation in weather up here – one image taken at peak snow, and then other after the thaw!

Monadhliath Peatland Restoration – update 2

All guns blazing just now on the collaborative Monadhliath peatland restoration project, working across 6 estates with (at its peak) a plan to have 24 excavators working.  We were working today on developing some new approaches to gully re-profiling.  On the way home I came across this herd of Sika deer contentedly grazing in a roadside field on Loch Ness-side. So many of them around these parts!

Caenlochan SAC – herbivore impact assessment

We started the second phase of a major job this week for SNH measuring herbivore impacts on the Caernlochan SAC.  Spent some time up on Glas Maol developing a few bolt-on monitoring techniques we want to use to expand out the knowledge base a bit.  Came across some dwarf willow, as well as this old experimental enclosure (?).
