National contract for woodland deer surveys

We were delighted to learn that we have won a major tender for Forestry and Land Scotland, to undertake all their woodland deer density surveys (using dung counts) and woodland deer impact assessments across Scotland for the next 4 years.  We expect survey work to begin soon and to be complete (first year) by July 2020.

Monadhliath Peat Action progressing well

The Monadhliath Peatland Action project is now well underway with over 20 excavators on site just now.  We’re making good progress after a slower than ideal start, arising from the grant money turning up slightly later than we’d hoped.  However, SNH has been great in the circumstances and helped us wherever they can to get us active on site.  We’ve also been reviewing the results of the work from the…

National deer damage survey completed

We’ve just completed a national survey of all recent forestry re-planting sites in Scotland for FLS.  It’s a massive task, involving visiting 450 sites.  The fieldwork involves measuring deer browsing impacts on each type of tree and then comparing the results to previous surveys.  Lots of interesting trends apparent in the data this year, for sure…
