Major bog restoration experiment

We’ve recently been setting up a new experiment to examine the prospects of restoring blanket bog on felled plantation forest. This is a fascinating long-term project that involves trying to restore a functioning acrotelm by raising the level of bog water table so new peat can form – the ultimate aim is to capture new carbon, whilst also minimizing losses of existing carbon. The work involves using an excavator to…

Hydropower Assessment

We’ve recently become involved in an interesting hydropower project in the Greater Glasgow area. The first stage of the project was to assess hydropower potential for the site, which comprises a wide-ranging network of lochs, reservoirs and watercourses in some mid-altitude hills. We then undertook a topographic survey of part of the site and undertook an environmental scoping exercise. The next stage will be to install flow gauging stations at…

Beinn Udlaidh

We were working for a client up near Tyndrum recently, on a mountain called Beinn Udlaidh. It has a very unusual and interesting quartzite dyke running up its NW flank. The mountain also contains high grade gold deposits associated with the same rock types as found at the nearby Cononish gold mine – an attempt to re-open this mine was made recently by Scotgold. The mountain is also famous for…

Peatlands

We’ve been working hard on an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a new windfarm in the south of Scotland over the past months. There’s a wide range of work to do on the site to try and characterize its mires and peatlands habitats including: identification of macrotope and mesotopes boundaries, developing 3-D models of peat depth, ascertaining landform change from historic images, quantifying carbon stores at the site, identifying land…
