Peatlands

We’ve been working hard on an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for a new windfarm in the south of Scotland over the past months. There’s a wide range of work to do on the site to try and characterize its mires and peatlands habitats including: identification of macrotope and mesotopes boundaries, developing 3-D models of peat depth, ascertaining landform change from historic images, quantifying carbon stores at the site, identifying land management impacts, assessing impacts on groundwater dependent terrestrial ecosystems (GWDTE), identifying areas for mitigation and developing a peat management plan. It’s quite a complex site with a lot of peatland erosion present, which makes the site a bit harder to map and a bit more challenging trying to predict what will happen if it is developed.
